Poet’s Note: “Ode” is a take-off that combines two of John Keat’s better known poems, “On First Looking into Chapman’s Homer” and “Ode on a Grecian Urn.” In each poem the romantic Keats describes being transported by a different kind of beauty. In “Ode” the poet is delivered from that pure beauty to a consciousness of how beauty today is appraised as a commodity.
“Ode” was first published in the anthology Paper Dance: 55 Latino Poets, edited by Víctor Hernández Cruz, Leroy V. Quintana, and Virgil Suárez., Persea Books (1995).
